You’re ready to begin your journey with Scan Note labels. You’ve created your note—now it’s time to connect it to something in the real world. In this post, we explore different ways to attach your QR codes and bring the digital and physical together.

Your Scan Note label is only helpful once it’s actually on your item—whether it’s a suitcase, a borrowed book, or a favorite water bottle. The good news? There are many easy and creative ways to attach your QR code depending on your needs and budget.

Paper Only

Some use cases don’t require anything more than regular printer paper. For example:

  • Use a printed bookmark label inside a borrowed book.

  • Slip a printed label into luggage tags designed to hold paper, like those with zippered plastic inserts.

This is the simplest, fastest method and it's perfect for items that already have protective holders.

Tape and Paper

This was the go-to method during development of the Scan Note App and we still use it often.

Print your QR codes (we offer multiple sizes and layout options), cut them out, then:

  • Cover them with clear tape for durability

  • Stick them directly onto your item

It’s quick, inexpensive, and flexible, especially for flat or lightly textured surfaces.

Sticker Paper

Sticker paper offers a nice upgrade from regular paper. You can buy:

  • Pre-cut labels (like address labels)

  • Full-sheet sticker paper you cut to size

Some brands provide templates to help you align designs. And with Scan Note, you can copy and paste your QR code into your own custom layouts. This gives you full design freedom with minimal setup.

Sticker quality varies, so be sure to check whether your paper is water-resistant or suited for outdoor use if needed.

Order Custom Stickers

For a more polished look and higher durability, consider ordering custom stickers online. These are ideal if you:

  • Want professional print quality

  • Need waterproof or weatherproof labels

  • Are labeling multiple items with the same QR code

Ordering in bulk brings the cost down, but single custom stickers tend to be more expensive and require a few days for processing and shipping.

Other Materials

If you want maximum durability, look into custom plastic or metal tags with your QR code printed directly on them. These work well for high-value or outdoor items like instruments, sports gear, or tools.

They’re more expensive and require specialized vendors, but they offer the best performance in terms of wear, weather resistance, and permanence.

One Last Step: Give It a Quick Test

Before heading out into the world with your labeled item, scan the QR code yourself to make sure it works as expected. If the surface is too curved or reflective, it might distort the code and make it harder to scan. A quick test ensures everything is working smoothly.

What to Choose

Now that you have a general sense of what’s available, you can choose the option that suits you best. If attaching to things with a handle (like luggage or instruments), we suggest home-printing and using a luggage tag. For items that don’t need much waterproofing (like a tennis racket), tape and paper works great. If waterproofing matters, ordering professionally printed stickers is a good solution. For rigid and highly durable needs, plastic or metal tags will serve you well.
